Affiliate marketing is the one way to earn on Instagram that does not depend on how many followers you have. You earn when your audience buys. A nano creator whose followers trust their recommendations can out-earn a much bigger account. Here is how it works in India.

How affiliate marketing works

  1. A brand gives you a tracked link (and often a discount code) that is yours alone.
  2. You share it: in a Reel caption, a Story link sticker, your link in bio.
  3. When someone buys through it, the sale is recorded against your name.
  4. You earn a commission, a percentage of the sale.

The link is how the brand knows the sale came from you. A code helps too, because people who watch on one phone and buy on another still use it.

How much commission do affiliates earn in India?

It depends on the platform and category. Shopping-app and marketplace programmes are often in the low single digits; creator affiliate platforms in India publicly quote ranges of roughly 0.5% to 12% depending on the brand. Beauty, wellness and D2C brands usually pay more than electronics.

On Zorrid the rate is fixed and simple: the brand pays 10% of the sale, of which 8% goes to you and 2% to Zorrid. On a ₹1,000 order you earn ₹80. On fifty orders a month, that is ₹4,000 from one link.

What sells: niches and formats

  • Things you use daily: skincare, haircare, baby products, home and kitchen, fitness gear.
  • Products with a visible result: before and after, a routine, a fix for a common problem.
  • Formats that show the product working: a 20-second "how I use it" Reel beats a flat-lay photo every time.
  • Link in bio: your one always-on link. A link in bio + storefront page lets you list several products, each with its own link, under your name.
  • Story link stickers: the highest-converting spot, because the viewer has just seen the product.
  • Reel captions and pinned comments: write the code in the caption, since links in captions are not clickable.
  • Highlights: a "Shop my picks" highlight keeps working long after the Story expires.

How attribution works on Zorrid

Knowing the rules helps you trust the numbers:

  • A click on your link counts for 30 days. If the shopper buys within that window, the sale is yours.
  • If a shopper clicked more than one creator's link, the last click before the order wins.
  • Your link and code keep earning after the deal ends, for as long as the campaign's link works.
  • Each sale waits 30 days, the refund window, before it is approved. Refunded orders are reversed.
  • Zorrid pays you, not the brand, once you are owed at least the payout minimum, by bank transfer or UPI, with TDS deducted where the law requires.

Affiliate or barter? Do both

The strongest deal for a creator is often barter plus affiliate: the brand sends the product, you make the content, and your link earns on every sale it drives, for as long as people keep buying. See barter collaborations explained.

Disclosure and tax

  • Disclose it. An affiliate link is a material connection under ASCI's influencer guidelines, so label the post as advertising (#ad, #affiliate is not on ASCI's list, so use #ad alongside it). See our ASCI explainer.
  • It is income. Commission is taxable income. Platforms may deduct TDS before paying you; it shows in your Form 26AS and you claim it when you file. If your total income from services grows large, GST may apply. Speak to a chartered accountant once it becomes regular income.

Commission varies by platform and category, from low single digits on marketplaces to around 12% on some creator platforms. On Zorrid creators earn 8% of every sale.

Is affiliate income taxable?

Yes, commission is income. TDS may be deducted before you are paid and can be claimed when you file your return. Speak to a chartered accountant if it becomes regular income.

Do I need a website for affiliate marketing?

No. Your Instagram, Story links and a link in bio page are enough to share and track affiliate links.
